4 Parliamentary Seats Declared Vacant By Speaker Of Parliament

The Speaker of , Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has today granted a motion by the Minority Speaker, Dr.
Cassiel Ato Forson to declare four parliamentary seats as vacant.

Reading his ruling on Thursday, October 17, 2024, the Speaker noted that the decision by the affected MPs to contest in the December 7, 2024, election as independent or on the ticket of a party different from the party on whose ticket they currently serve, contravened Article 97 (g) and (h) of the 1992 Constitution.

He noted that the motive and operational effect of Article 97(g) and (h) was to cure the issues of cross carpeting and defection as witnessed in parliaments of old.

These Members of Parliament affected by his ruling include the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the MP for Fomena, who, according to Iddrisu, has now filed to contest the 2024 election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), having previously served as an independent MP.

The other MPs facing challenges are Cynthia Mamle Morrison of Agona East and Kwadwo Asante of Suhum, both currently in Parliament under the NPP but now running as independents in the 2024 elections as well as Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Peter Kwakye-Ackah
