Afenyo Markin- Npp will walkout on Tuesday if….

Afenyo Markin

Alexander Afenyo Markin has downplayed the possibility of a showdown when Parliament reconvenes on Tuesday, following tensions between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, Mr. Afenyo Markin stated that his side will walk out if the situation escalates, insisting that the Supreme Court’s directive must be respected.

The dispute arises after Speaker Alban Bagbin declared the seats of four MPs vacant, citing Article 97 of the Constitution. The MPs had allegedly switched political allegiances by filing to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections under different parties. However, the Supreme Court intervened last Friday, halting the Speaker’s decision and reinstating the MPs until further legal proceedings are completed.

Afenyo Markin emphasized that the Supreme Court’s bailiff would be serving Parliament on Monday, and that the NPP would follow legal guidance. He suggested that if the NDC defied the court’s directive and tried to take over the Majority seats or push forward with legislation such as abolishing the e-levy, the NPP would simply walk out.

Meanwhile, the NDC Caucus, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has maintained its position, asserting that the Speaker’s ruling stands and that they now form the Majority in Parliament. They have vowed to protect their new status and resist any external interference, challenging the Supreme Court’s intervention as unlawful.

As Parliament prepares to reconvene, both sides remain firm in their stances, with legal battles expected to intensify in the coming days.
