Alban Bagbin, In a firm reminder, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has addressed those threatening to cling to power after the December elections, making it clear that they have no choice but to abide by the will of the people. During a press engagement in Tamale, Speaker Bagbin emphasized that the Constitution unequivocally states that power belongs to the people, and their decisions at the polls must be respected.

He further assured that Parliament is committed to ensuring a peaceful electoral process. The Speaker’s remarks came ahead of a public lecture celebrating 30 years of Ghana’s Parliament and democracy. In addition, Speaker Bagbin shed light on the rigorous legislative processes, including the scrutiny of controversial bills like the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Bill, emphasizing Parliament’s dedication to considering diverse perspectives.

The engagement also saw the Northern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association, Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, praising the Speaker for his commitment to press freedom and urging journalists to play a constructive role in maintaining peace during the elections.

Amidst concerns from various groups about potential threats to a peaceful power transition, Speaker Bagbin’s message stands as a crucial reminder of the Constitution’s authority and the paramountcy of the people’s will.
