AngloGold Ashanti suspends mining activity in Ghana with immediate effect.
AngloGold Ashanti Ltd has suspended mining activity at its Obuasi gold mine with immediate effect.
The move is coming barely three days after some four persons working for Underground Mining Alliance, UMA, a company contracted by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine got trapped underground on Tuesday.
Three out of the four workers managed to escape when the pit caved in, the company has confirmed.
A statement issued by the mining firm says it suspended activity at the mine because safety remains its highest priority.
It says effort are underway to rescue the remaining worker.
The company said it will provide an update on the situation in due course.
