Dr. James Kwabena Bomfeh, known as Kabilla, a Development Studies Ph.D. holder and former Ag General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has strongly opposed the recent calls for a state of emergency in response to illegal mining, or galamsey, in Ghana.
As the nation grapples with the severe consequences of galamsey, many activists are urging President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to halt all small-scale mining operations. They argue that this drastic measure is essential to combat the pollution of water bodies and environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities.

However, Kabilla contends that these demands are driven by a hidden “regime change agenda.” He believes that rather than focusing solely on immediate measures, stakeholders should address the underlying issues fueling the galamsey crisis.
He emphasized that the roots of this problem extend back to the early 2000s, with warnings from various organizations and individuals about the dangers posed by illegal mining. Kabilla made his remarks during a recent appearance on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, calling for a more nuanced approach to tackle the galamsey menace effectively.
