The Electoral Commission (EC) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a fair, transparent, and credible 2024 election, emphasizing that it does not have the authority to determine the outcome. This assurance was given by the EC Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, during a Let the Citizen Know press conference held on Friday, September 20, 2024.

During the event, the Commission officially revealed that 13 presidential candidates had successfully qualified for the 2024 election, while 10 candidates were disqualified for failing to meet the nomination requirements or correct errors brought to their attention. One candidate voluntarily withdrew after filing their nomination.

Addressing concerns about the EC’s role, Mrs. Mensa clarified:

“As referees, our role is to arrange and organize an orderly, fair, transparent, peaceful, and credible election. We do not have the power to determine who wins the elections. That power lies with the good people of our dear country. The citizens alone can determine who should lead them – not the Electoral Commission.”

The EC also reiterated its commitment to engaging with stakeholders to ensure the upcoming election is peaceful and transparent, while urging candidates to run campaigns based on policies that will benefit the nation.

Mrs. Mensa concluded by urging Ghanaians to trust in the electoral process, stating, “It is the candidate chosen by the citizens who will be declared President of the Republic of Ghana by the Electoral Commission on December 7, 2024.” She further assured the public that the EC has established a fair, open, and accountable process for the declaration of results.
