77 Year old, first Vice President of Zanzibar, Seif Sharif Hamad , who had been receiving treatment for COVID-19 in hospital, has died, the government announced on Wednesday.
On Jan 31 Hamad tested positive for coronavirus and was hospitalized in the archipelago although the cause of death has not been made public yet.
John Magufuli, Tanzania’s president, sent messages of condolence to Mwinyi and the people of Zanzibar upon hearing of the sudden death of the leading opposition icon, who was also the chairman of the Alliance for Change and Transparency party (ACT-Wazalendo).
He took to Twitter and wrote, “I have received with profound shock the news of the death of Hon. Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad, the First Vice President of Zanzibar”.
“I send my condolences to the President of Zanzibar Hon Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, Family, Zanzibaris, ACT-Wazalendo members, and all Tanzanians. May his soul rest in peace.”
The president of the semi-autonomous island region of Tanzania, Husein Mwinyi, announced seven days of mourning with the flag flown at half-mast.
He in a statement said he had learned “with great sadness [of] the death of Seif Sharif Hamad.”
Messages of condolence are still trooping in from world leader and dignitaries.
