Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe gunned down

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died after being shot during a campaign speech Friday in western Japan, hospital officials have said.

The 67 year old former Prime Minister was shot from behind minutes after he started his presenting his speech on July, 8, 2022, for a party candidate near Yamato-Saidaiji Station in Nara, Nara Prefecture, at around 11:30 a.m. JST.

He was immediately airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment, but was not breathing and his heart had stopped.

He was later pronounced dead after emergency treatment that included massive blood transfusions and medication, hospital officials said.

Meanwhile, police arrested the suspected gunman at the scene of the attack that has shocked many in Japan, which is one of the world’s safest and peaceful nations.
