GFA to Announce First-Ever Full-Time Professional Referees in Ghana

Kurt Okraku

Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to unveil the first group of full-time professional referees in the country’s history. This groundbreaking move was announced by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku during the association’s 30th Ordinary Congress held at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram on Tuesday.

The initial batch will consist of five male and five female referees, marking a significant milestone as referees in Ghana will be employed on a full-time basis for the first time. This initiative is part of the GFA’s broader effort to elevate the quality and professionalism of officiating in Ghanaian football.

President Simeon-Okraku emphasized the importance of this step for the development of football in Ghana, highlighting that full-time referees will now be able to dedicate themselves entirely to their duties. “This is a significant step in our efforts to professionalize all aspects of football in Ghana. By employing referees on a full-time basis, we are ensuring that they have the time, resources, and support needed to perform at the highest level,” he stated.

The introduction of full-time referees aims to address longstanding concerns about officiating standards in the country, which have been a priority for the GFA. This initiative is expected to improve the consistency and quality of refereeing across all competitions.

In addition, the decision to include both male and female referees underscores the GFA’s commitment to promoting gender equality within Ghanaian football.

The official announcement of the first batch of professional referees will be made in the coming days, signaling a new era for officiating in Ghana.
