With respect to the shocking food safety scandal involving Ghana’s school feeding program, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a bold and reassuring statement to the public.
He has promised that under a John Dramani Mahama-led government, no Senior High School (SHS) student will ever be served with expired food.
Dr. Omane Boamah’s comments come after an exposé by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, which revealed a disturbing lapse in the government’s school feeding initiative. According to Ablakwa, 22,000 kilograms of expired rice had been repackaged and distributed to SHS students, raising alarm about the safety and quality of food provided to the nation’s youth.
Public Outrage Over Expired Rice Scandal
The revelations have sparked widespread outrage across the country. Parents, educators, health professionals, and citizens have expressed deep concern over the potential health risks posed by such a significant lapse in food safety. The school feeding program, which serves as a vital resource for many students, particularly those from low-income families, is intended to provide nutritious meals to support the health and academic performance of young learners.
However, the discovery of expired rice being distributed as part of this initiative has raised serious questions about the quality control measures and oversight mechanisms within the program. Critics have pointed to the apparent lack of rigorous checks and balances in place to ensure the safety of the food served to students, a failure that could have far-reaching consequences for their health and well-being.
In response to the exposé, Dr. Omane Boamah took to social media on Sunday, November 17, to express the NDC’s commitment to a higher standard of care for students under a future Mahama administration
