George Mireku Duker, MP and Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has officially launched the Miners4Bawumia group, calling on miners to become the forefront champions in the battle against illegal mining. Speaking at the event in Akwatia, Eastern Region, on Friday, September 20, 2024, Mireku Duker, who also coordinates Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign in mining communities, urged miners to uphold responsible mining practices and trust in Dr. Bawumia to safeguard their livelihoods.

Hundreds of miners from various mining communities attended the launch, affirming their commitment to responsible mining while expressing confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s ability to protect their jobs. Mireku Duker reassured the miners that Bawumia values the mining sector’s crucial role in Ghana’s economy and will not pursue policies that harm the industry.

Instead, Duker emphasized Bawumia’s intention to strengthen the mining sector by implementing policies to improve and regulate the industry. He highlighted the planned establishment of the Mineral Development Bank, a key promise by Dr. Bawumia, which will empower Ghanaians to create responsible mining companies.

Addressing recent calls for a ban on small-scale mining, the Deputy Minister explained that Ghana’s laws already prohibit illegal mining. He called for strict enforcement of these laws rather than a complete ban, reiterating the government’s commitment to responsible mining practices.

Ernest Yaw Kumi, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, spoke about the economic significance of small-scale mining, noting that over five million Ghanaians benefit from the sector. He cautioned against illegal mining while stressing that banning small-scale mining entirely would have devastating consequences for many Ghanaians.

Jeff Konadu, Eastern Regional NPP Chairman, urged miners not to be swayed by what he described as empty promises from the NDC. He commended Mireku Duker for his continued advocacy for small-scale miners and challenged the NDC’s presidential candidate to clearly state his position on the issue.

Former MP Ama Sey also rallied support for Dr. Bawumia’s 2024 campaign, assuring miners that their jobs would be protected under a Bawumia presidency.

The leadership of Miners4Bawumia expressed gratitude to Hon. Duker for his reassurances and pledged their support for Dr. Bawumia’s bid for the presidency
