The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to address the nation regarding the ongoing environmental crisis caused by illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. This plea comes amidst mounting concerns over the severe destruction of water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves due to unchecked mining activities.
In a press statement released on Sunday, September 15, 2024, the Minority, led by Alhassan Suhuyini, the Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, stressed the urgent need for the president to explain the government’s current strategies to combat the escalating environmental degradation. They emphasized that despite President Akufo-Addo’s earlier commitment to fight galamsey, the situation has worsened, with allegations of high-profile individuals being involved in the illegal practice.

The Minority expressed grave concerns about the long-term consequences of this environmental damage, particularly for agriculture and access to clean water. They warned of potential food insecurity and health risks if immediate actions are not taken. Furthermore, they called on the president to propose actionable solutions, involving local communities, law enforcement, and civil society, to restore the country’s degraded lands and polluted rivers.
The group also demanded stricter enforcement of existing laws and thorough investigations into allegations that some government officials may be complicit in the illegal mining activities. They argued that the president has a responsibility to lead the charge in safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources for future generations, and a transparent national address would demonstrate the government’s commitment to addressing the galamsey menace and protecting the environment.
In summary, the Minority insists that Ghanaians deserve to hear directly from President Akufo-Addo on how the government plans to halt illegal mining and ensure the sustainable use of the country’s natural resources.
