President Appoints New Chief of Defence Staff.


President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed Rear Admiral Seth Amoama to act as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) to the Ghana armed forces. He takes over from Lt. Gen. O.B. Akwa who’s appointment comes to an end after 4 and half years tour of duty.

It will be recalled that Lt. Gen. Akwa’s appointment as CDS was extended for another 6 months in June 2020 until the end of January 2021 by the President.

Lt. Gen. Obed Akwa was appointed by President Akuffo-Addo on 20 June 2017. Prior to his appointment, he was the Chief of Army Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Rear Admiral Seth Amoama until his new appointment was the Chief of Naval Staff at the General Headquarters of the Ghana armed forces. He is being replaced by Rear Admiral Issah Adams Yakubu as the new Chief of Naval Staff. The former was the Chief of Staff at the General headquarters in Burma Camp.

Both appointments take effect on Friday, February 5, 2021, but will be in acting capacity pending consultation with the yet to be constituted Council of State.

The president in a press release congratulated the outgoing CDS, for his meritorious service to the Ghana Armed Forces and the nation. He said a new Cheif of Staff will be appointed to replace the outgoing one in due course in accordance with applicable regulations.
