Sokode Senior High Technical School Closed Amidst Student-Community Clash

Sokode SHS shut down

Sokode, Volta Region – All students of Sokode Senior High Technical School have been sent home following a directive for the temporary closure of the school. The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC) issued this directive on Sunday, 23rd February, in response to violent clashes between students and local residents, which resulted in multiple injuries.

According to reports, the confrontation began when some students were attacked while buying food in the community. In retaliation, they returned to the school and mobilized their peers for a counter-attack.

Upon the students’ recall to campus, they were ambushed by a group of local youths and the Asafo Company, leading to further injuries on both sides and damage to property, including a staff member’s vehicle.

In an interview with Channel One News, the Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Francis Yao Agbemeadi, confirmed the incident and emphasized that the temporary closure was necessary to ensure students’ safety.

“We decided to close the school as a precautionary measure to protect the students, given the dicey nature of the situation and on the advice of REGSEC,” stated Mr. Agbemeadi. He outlined plans for transporting the students home, noting that those from Ho have already returned, and four buses have been dispatched to Accra. Additional support from some MPs has facilitated more buses leaving for Kpando.

Mr. Agbemeadi also assured that a full investigation would be conducted to determine the root cause of the incident and inform further action.

This latest development comes just two weeks after a similar clash between students of Islamic Senior High School (ISSEC) in Kumasi and local youths near the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on 14th February.
