Olive Oil is the natural oil extracted from olives, the fruit of the olive tree. About 14% of the oil is saturated fat, whereas 11% is polyunsaturated, such as omega-6 and omega-3.
The benefits of olive oil has been proven over the centuries to be of great benefit for our health.
Olive oil protects against inflammation, a key driver of heart disease and it also reduces oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol. The oil protects LDL particles from oxidative damage, a key factor in the development of heart disease and it improves blood vessel health.
But olive oil also has it’s bad side effects for our health if not used properly or in moderation.
Increased fat in the blood after fat-rich meals, including meals rich in olive oil may also injure our arteries and promote heart disease because they increase inflammation. So too much of it can be bad for your health.
But did you know there two types of Olive Oils in the market for both cooking and anointing purposes in church?
B.P Grade Olive Oil is not solvent extracted, and contains a healthy fatty acid profile – comprised mainly of mono-unsaturated fats. It is soft refined by mechanical means without the use of chemicals or extreme heat. It is used in the preparation of liniments, ointments, massage oils, plasters and soaps.
Yes! It is the pharmaceutical version and meant for External use only (skin care, massages and treatment of wounds), therefore its not supposed to be ingested (swallowed).
The other type is the edible one, used for cooking and for mixing delicious and healthy salads.
So when buying the Olive oil, make sure u check the label and read the instructions very carefully before applying it.
Why am I saying all this?
I have observed with dismay how many Christians in our churches today apply the olive oils for healing purposes.
Most of them bring the BP grade types for “Anointing Services” and then I see them injest it by putting some into their mouths and drinking it as a form of healing oil because the pastor advised that they drink a little to cure certain ailments in the body. This is absolutely unacceptable and very wrong.
For me that’s not bad if only they used the right olive oil; the edible type.
Olive oil is a very good oil and has lots of medicinal properties so its good for the body but it must be applied and used well, be it the edible or the pharmaceutical (BP) type.
Many of us don’t know the difference between the two types and as far as we are concerned, olive oil is olive oil. That’s where my greatest worry lies.
My point is that the BP grade type is not edible and therefore it is harmful to the human body if ingested.
I hereby call on all pastors, healers, evangelists and prophets who lead us in church to help educate the members to know this basic fact about the usage of these olive oil types, because indeed they are the best people to do this because they are the ones who conduct the Anointing Services in church with the olive oils.
We must also be very mindful about the types of olive oil we buy and the sources from which they were made.
The good olive oils out there are sold in both pharmacy shops and departmental stores, that’s where you must look for them to purchase.
For your additional information, the differences between the BP grade type and the edible one is that the BP has a strong smell like medicine and the edible one is almost scentless.
Also check the seals to make sure they are intact otherwise don’t buy them.
You should also be careful about buying those with perfumed scents because they might probably be fake ones; avoid them.
Finally, it is very important that we educate ourselves enough into knowing the differences between these oil oils and their applications, so that we don’t end up harming ourselves and our children unknowingly, all in the name of applying “Annointing Oil” for healing purposes.
Next week I will discuss how to spot fake olive oil out there, waiting to be used to scam unsuspecting buyers.
