Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asserted that the 2024 elections will be centered on Ghana’s economic challenges.
Addressing Ghanaians at a campaign event, Mahama responded to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer who is the current vice – president, and who had posed 50 questions to him.
Mahama criticized these questions as distractions, saying they did not address the real concerns of Ghanaians, which revolve around the economy.
Mahama referenced the 1992 U.S. presidential election between Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush, during which Clinton’s team famously coined the phrase, “It’s the economy, stupid,” to emphasize the economic challenges Americans were facing.
Mahama argued that Ghana is in a similar situation today, with the economic crisis in the country, and he stated that this should be the central issue in the election, rather than discussions about infrastructure or other topics.
He called on Bawumia to answer five key economic questions that Ghanaians want addressed, rather than deflecting with irrelevant points or insisting on a debate.
