Yaw Asani Tano: Special Prosecutor deserves national support in executing his mandate

Yaw Asani Tano, a socio-political commentator, has expressed support for the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) handling of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s case. Ofori-Atta has faced allegations of corruption, and Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng recently named him a fugitive, claiming he is evading justice.

During a press conference, Agyebeng disclosed that Ofori-Atta had been summoned to assist in investigations related to the controversial deal between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML). Additionally, Ofori-Atta is being investigated for his alleged involvement in the expenditure of $58 million of taxpayers’ money on the construction of the National Cathedral and other matters.

Agyebeng emphasized, “The OSP declares Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta a wanted fugitive. Mr. Ofori-Atta, you have two choices: return to the jurisdiction voluntarily or face the consequences. He is a fugitive from justice.” He reiterated the need for Ofori-Atta’s immediate return, warning that the OSP would enforce his return if necessary.

The OSP has since removed Ofori-Atta from its wanted list, stating, “Mr. Ofori-Atta has been removed from the OSP’s list of wanted persons, and the OSP ceases to consider Mr. Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice pending his voluntary return to the jurisdiction.”

Contributing to Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Yaw Asani Tano defended the Special Prosecutor’s actions. He argued that the Special Prosecutor deserves national support in executing his mandate and saw no issue with the initial declaration of Ofori-Atta as a fugitive.

Tano stated, “What is wrong with inviting Ken Ofori-Atta to come down and answer questions by himself? I don’t see anything wrong with it.” He affirmed his full support for the Special Prosecutor, emphasizing, “I am wholly in support of the Special Prosecutor to bring him down to come and answer questions or allegations that have been leveled against him.”

Tano concluded that Ofori-Atta should return and submit himself to the OSP’s investigations.
